Getting Started
The first goal is not optimization. It is learning how to move, save progress, recover safely, and read the game’s feedback.
First Priorities
Learn movement, room reading, and your own status before worrying about gear or area routes.
- Use `north`, `south`, `east`, `west`, `up`, and `down` to move.
- Use `look`, `score`, `equipment`, and `inventory` often.
- Use `affects` to see the spells or effects currently on your character.
- Use `save` after meaningful gains, especially after quests or moving equipment between characters.
Leaving Safely
`quit` saves automatically, but `save` is still worth using deliberately after important progress.
- `quit` returns you to the same room when you log back in.
- `delete
` permanently removes the character. - `recall` returns you to Chakkor, costs experience if used in combat, and can fail.
Starting Habits
The help files strongly encourage a few habits early on: save often, keep an eye on your score and affects, and do not assume recall is free. During combat, recall is more expensive than fleeing and may fail in cursed or restricted rooms. A recall scroll is required even though it does not need to be recited.
Basic Commands Worth Knowing
- `score` gives detailed character statistics. `status` is the shorter version.
- `equipment` shows worn gear, weapons, and held items. `inventory` shows what you are carrying.
- `consider` gives a rough estimate of your odds in a fight.
- `help
` is still the fastest way to reach the original in-game documentation.
